For the last few months, I’ve been brimming over with excitement to share this video with you! In October, I traveled to New York City to sit down and interview my long-time friend, Christy Turlington Burns. We hadn’t seen each other in a few years, so it was fun to hang out and chat about what we’re both doing in our careers and lives.
I had so many questions for her on career development and personal brand that we talked for over an hour. It wasn’t easy paring it down but ultimately, it resulted in two fantastic videos. This first one, which I’m sharing here, is dedicated to our chat about personal brand – how to define it, develop it, and put it out in the world, Christy style. (The second video on career development is coming soon.)
As you probably know, Christy rose to fame as one of the world’s top supermodels by the time she was in her late teens, gracing more than 100 magazine covers and walking the catwalk for all the major designers. What you may not know is that Christy didn’t want her brand to only be about her modeling career but she eventually recognized that it could serve as a launching pad for her true calling – advocacy and humanitarian work.
Check out the conversation:
I just have to say for the record that Christy couldn’t have been any more magnanimous in offering her time, energy, and spirit. She showed up 5 minutes early and was ready to rock and roll. She’s not messing around when she says that being on time is part of her brand!! I love the simplicity of it but how much it also says about her and her values.
If you think about it for another moment, you’ll realize that your brand attributes don’t have to be big, grand things. It’s the combination of your attributes and values that set you apart.
Did you catch the acronym of Christy’s women’s active wear line, NUALA? Natural, Universal, Altruistic, Limitless, and Authentic. Those 5 words speak volumes and are 100% true of Christy. Did you sense those brand values within this video?
What would your 5 words be? If you’re not sure where to begin, start with thinking about peak experiences in your life and reflecting on what made those moments so impactful. Write down everything that comes to mind in terms of how you felt and what was important to you about it. You’ll begin to see your values and talents rise to the surface.
I’d love to hear what you thought of this video (my first EVER as a Career Stylist!). Leave a comment and share one thing that you took away from this conversation.
I also encourage you to check out Christy’s incredible organization, Every Mother Counts. It’s amazing what she’s doing for global maternal health and the difference she’s making in the world…but she needs all of our help. Take a minute to check it out.
