I recently stumbled across a fascinating video that I wanted to share with you. A Harvard researcher, Amy Cuddy, discovered ways for people to feel more powerful through simple tweaks to their body language. I don't want to ruin the surprise but I tested out a few of her theories and it totally worked!! It reminded me of that saying, "Fake it until you make it." Now, to be honest, I typically have a negative reaction to that phrase. You're usually not faking it (not really!) and it implies that you are a fraud which isn't empowering. However, I love the idea that if we practice a few different "power poses" prior to a situation that requires feeling in control, powerful, and confident, it can really do the trick. Why wouldn't you want to maximize your chance of making a great first impression and have your audience engaged in what you have to say instantly? Watch the video and then think about all of the situations in which you could test it out…perhaps a job interview, giving a presentation, leading an important meeting, asking for a promotion or raise, asking someone out on a date, going to a networking event, giving a sales pitch. The potential applications are endless.
